Went up West Ridge to the peak. Bare booted 75% of the hike today. Spikes were much appreciated in some sketchy spots. Only ones on the peak, very windy, exposed skin was cold. Came down Clark and South Ridge trail to Cardigan South Peak. From there we wanted to add a little distance so did the 2 mile out and back on Skyland Trail to Mt Gilman. Back to South Ridge and all the way down and back to West Ridge. Back down the access road to where we parked by the gate. Snow shoes were not needed though may have been helpful in a couple spots on Skyland. South Ridge coming down was very sketchy in one area, very steep. The puppy was afraid and had to be carried. 7.5 miles total distance. Awesome day and great hike. Would highly recommend. Be ready for wet feet, bring extra socks, spikes are highly recommend. Snow shoes are not necessary.
