Trail started out dry and manageable but put spikes on at the halfway point to Lonesome Lake. I continued on past the lake on the Lonesome Lake trail which had a pretty good monorail going with a few postholes off the sides. The previous night low temps kept the snow frozen and granulated which was nice. Didn’t have any problems up to the view point at the big rock in Coppermine Col but after that, where it starts getting REALLY steep was where it turned really icy. I mean dangerous, scary icy. It was cascading down the trail and there was just no way around it. I attempted to get up that section but I wasn’t sure what I was going to find further up and also what Hi Cannon trail was going to look like on the way back down so I cut my losses and turned around when I was about a third of the way ay up the really steep part. NOT FUN! Hard decision but as they say, the mountain will always be there for a better day. If I had had fallen ascending/descending that part it would’ve been a bad day for sure. If you’re gonna attempt this route to Cannon in the near future I’d highly recommend full crampons and probably an ice axe for this section. Or here’s a better idea , just wait for summer! If you’re crazy like me and you’re really intent on doing cannon right now you might wanna try Hi Cannon trail. It might be better than Kinsman Ridge at the moment. Not many times that I’ve had to force myself to turn around but today it was definitely the right move. |
