This was my first summit ever. My comments reflect. I didn't know if I could do this at 250 lbs. I'd say the rating "hard" for Piper trail fits. 12" railroad ties made for big steps. Fairly steep inclines for most of the hike. Granite outcroppings and water trickling made slips possible. Fatigue and low sugar made this more of an event for me. I did have snacks and about 1.5 litres of water (barely enough for me). Wish I had thought of doing my training hikes (about 2-3 miles 3x per week) with a weighted backpack. This might have made the hike much easier for me. I was surprised 50 feet from the top as 3 sections were like real wall climbing. About a mile of firm snow ...learned about postholes but only fell in once. Summit took 4 hours up. Total about 7 hours. Again I was not used to doing such things with a pack on and at my weight. I was prepared but could have been more prepared. Hiking poles are a plus. They helped a ton. Rain would make some rock outcroppings very slippery. Had microspikes with me but didn't need them. Incredible views and great feeling of accomplishment. Do your
research. Great hike. |
