A few trees down here and there. I don't recall if this was the case last time I was here but the unnamed trail is marked with dark red spray paint dots and arrows. Definitely not standard blazing. I recall lots of flagging last time that was not present today. |

Black flies were out but were not numerous today. Since this area has been heavily logged and is brushy, be mindful of ticks, both on yourself and on your dog if you bring one. I picked up two of the little nasties. |

I'd only been here once before and that was in winter, and I think I prefer deep snow on the ground for this one. ;) Both Carter Mtn. Rd. and the logging road were wet/muddy and a bit of a slog in places. The unnamed trail was mostly dry to start but became wet as showers moved through.
On the way up, I missed the turn for the unnamed trail but was able to correct my course on the way down. The turn off the logging road isn't totally obvious and is easy to miss. Interestingly, the New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) map for this property shows this route as a "trail" but it's more of a crudely-marked herd path. Definitely not a formal trail with standardized markings, signs, etc.
Unlike last time, when the door to the NEFF cabin at the top was frozen shut, I was able to explore inside today. Let's just say it's stocked well enough to keep you cozy and comfortable for a while. Really neat spot.
Around the summit area are a few contenders for highest point. One of them has an old cairn nearby. I did not see a register anywhere.
The hike down was in a steady light rain that of course stopped once I reached Carter Mtn. Rd. Figures! |
