The lower gate to the Ravine Lodge Road is open, but the gate just past the summer parking is closed. It’s a 10-minute walk from the summer parking area to the lodge on dry gravel road. |

The lower gate to the Ravine Lodge Road was open, but the upper one was closed just past the “summer parking” area. It was a 10-minute road walk to the lodge, and a few more minutes to start of the Gorge Brook trail. The road was bare, and the trail was clear of snow for the first quarter mile or so, then it was patchy ice between rocks before turning into mostly-solid monorail and then a solid snowy trail. The treadway was mostly solid as long as you stay in the middle. I put on microspikes shortly after the ice began, and kept them on until treeline, where the trail became bare again. Everything was firm enough that snowshoes were not necessary, though of course that could change with rain or warmer temperatures.
This trail was surprisingly busy for a Monday in April. I was the first in the parking lot and counted 17 other hikers on my descent, and 15 cars in the lot upon my return. It was almost full. I’m guessing it would be packed on a weekend, so get there early for parking.
Overall the conditions were great for spring, and a clear but windy day on top. My dog Laney had a great time, with only three hikes left to finish her 4000-footers, and I bagged this one for my April grid! |
