LOST! A black hillsound trail crampon, mens large, came off my foot in the flattish section after the snapper junction and before where the main monorail starts just after the second bridge crossing. |

If you want variety when it comes to a decaying monorail, you will find it on the Moos. Barebooted to just shy of second bridge crossing. Probably a section of 100 ft of ice/monorail. The flattish section after you make the turn on Gorge Brook is dry/no snow/a little muddy until you start hitting a steeper ascent at around 3000 ft (or so). Monorail is decent shape, just wide enough to walk without thinking much or to walk on icy on the non elevated portion. Monorail higher up, especially in the switchbacks around the first and second outlooks and just below the ledges at tree line are like balance beam width. Postholed a bunch straddling that mess. Lots of elevated ice on monorail that was breaking underneath me on multiple occasions. Frustrating at times but nothing to stop the hike. Krumholz/spruce glades have a decent monorail.
Bring spikes...I saw one guy 1.5 miles in on Gorge Brook who didn't bring them (duh) and was turning around to go back to his car (including the road walk), so he added 4 miles to his hike to go get them when he finally hit the monorail. I wondered how anyone could not carry spikes. Oh, he was from Iowa! Hmmm.... :-) Not that I'm judging but for heaven sake... |
