Date of Hike: Saturday, May 4, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Livermore trailhead parking area had only 1 other car when we showed up just before 8am, another arrived by the time we started the hike shortly after. There were maybe 10 cars when we arrived back at 2:30pm, still plenty of parking available. $5 self-serve parking fee.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One minor crossing prior to north slide that required some wet rocks to navigate. 4 or 5 crossings between the bottom of the south slide and the loop intersection that required more work to navigate. Had to either hunt slightly off trail for a better location to cross or step on some slightly submerged rocks. Both of us made it across dry on all crossings but it was tricky. One crossing involved a significant jump.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: 1 tree trunk across the trail leading up to north slide, easy to duck or go over. The trail from the bottom of south slide to the intersection was a mess. Lots of small branches to clean up. I lost count of the number of trees fully across the trail, maybe 5ish. Each one we had to go off trail to get around. Not a huge deal but this section really needs some spring trail maintenance.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The couple that hiked ahead of us had a dog, followed some of their tracks when navigating up the north slide.
Bugs
Bugs: None.

Comments
Comments: Livermore Rd trail was a very easy walk along the road. No signs of snow until we were approaching the north slide and even then it was just patches.

North slide was very tricky to navigate in some parts. Many of the rocks were smooth with some water running from melting snow. Patches of snow still in the middle of the slide in spots. Due to the slippery rocks we spent a decent amount of time finding alternate paths around the foliage on the left side of the slide to help with hand holds. There was some postholing in the snow in these parts. The top of the slide where the rocks are more loose was mostly snow free. Overall it was a very challenging section, due to the conditions. Take your time and make sure of your footing, its very easy to slip on the wet rock in parts.

Bare-booted up the north slide to the summit of north. Probably could have put spikes on at the top of the slide going into the covered section of the trail but opted not to. Spikes did go on at the summit of north as the descent off the summit looked icy. Spikes remained on for the ridge traverse. Followed the monorail, though it wasn't raised yet so easy to step off. The monorail was holding fairly well, but some deep postholes here and there. Overall a fairly easy section.

Spikes came off at the top of the south slide. Almost no snow/ice except for some patches at the bottom of the slide, but we opted to keep them off and could find enough hand/footholds to avoid slipping. South slide was much easier to navigate than north, I'm glad we opted for the clockwise route because while going up south would have been much easier I wouldn't want to attempt going down north in these conditions.

The section of trail from the bottom of the south slide to the intersection is a mess. Not super hard to navigate but needs a ton of cleaning and multiple tree removals. The water was high enough that we got across the multiple crossings dry, but were often stepping on slightly submerged rocks and could have easily slipped.

Overall a great hike. Challenging, felt like an adventure. Was worried it would be socked in the entire time but the clouds parted while we were on both slides to give us some really amazing views. The views from the slides give a real sense of how high you are and how steep the slides are. Excellent views of Tecumseh/Waterville Valley and the Osceolas.
