Summer parking is now OPEN! During the day, they where actively dumping material and grading. There are some larger river rocks that are still exposed at present, but surely with traffic will get pushed in. The large washout by the 'bus stop' area has been filled in. |

A few blowdowns on Asquam Ridge, down low, easy access for DOC with mechanical advantage. There is a catastrophic water bar failure that will need to be addressed at elevation 4100 on Gorge Brook. Any other damage from December will need more time to be discovered |

A FINE day to get LOST (and STILL LOST) in my favorite patch o' woods. Snowshoes and skirt weather, aww yeah. Significant melting has occurred since my last visit last week. Bare boots on Asquam Ridge Trail, and bare ground to past the first bridge. After that, especially on the 16X reroute, rotten unconsolidated snow enters. We did not opt for snowshoes here as it was in patches that ebbed quickly, and its so rotted it would have not helped. We launched our bushwhack into Jobildunc along Asquam Ridge Trail, finding pleasant woods throughout (snowshoes went on at the start of said adventure). Noted a lot of moose activity around the headwall, as well as said Moose themself. We spooked it in the direction that we wished to go, so a new plan had to be created on the fly. Interesting bit of headwalls in there for sure. We found safe passage in a general north easterly direction up from the ravine floor to the Asquam Ridge Trail. We found good woods through here, aside from the last 30 feet to get to ART that was a jungle gym of blowdowns. We opted to wear snowshoes for bit longer before it became no longer worth it, around say 4200 or so. We put spikes on there, then off at treeline, then back on around East Moosilauke (the first cairn you see when you pop out of treeline, then pop back into it on GBT). A dime of a day on the summit, not a bad breeze, unlimited views, and very few people. A win! Spikes on as mentioned before from IAO East Moosilauke. Rails pretty good, but melting out. Kept spikes on until 3000 on the nose. From 3400-3100 (last sure water) it is largely melted out, but when you get to the river and the trail changes its direction, a solid rail comes back. |
