| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked in the lot off Rte. 16 in Gorham. There was a crew working on the railroad bridge adjacent to the lot. They had a section of the lot roped off, but there was still room for 4-5 cars. |

The Centennial Trail is probably the more popular route to Mt. Hayes. I opted for Mahoosuc Trail because I wanted to checkout Mascot Pond. I'm glad I did. There are lots of interesting sights even before you get to Mascot Pond. You walk by (or over) the railroad bridge, a hydroelectric dam, a canal, and some fine views of the northern Presidentials. Just be sure to stay on the marked trail. This area is an active work site and some parts are off limits to hikers.
Mascot Pond is beautiful and the ledges just below the summit have amazing views. After the ledges, I continued to the true summit of Mt. Hayes and then to the junction with Centennial Trail. This whole leg of the Mahoosuc Trail is snow free. |
