| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The dirt access road to the trailhead didn’t have the greatest winter; those two drainages that run obliquely across it are deeper and ruttier (is that a word?) than ever. Drive slowly! A lot of trees are marked with red tape and there is a lot of new gravel in the drainage that runs parallel to the access road. Thank you for your work on this road! |

Surpisingly the monorail that is intermittent between Starr King and Waumbek and fairly consistent for the last 0.25 to Waumbek, is solid. I kept waiting to punch through but it didn’t happen. There is some hard ice on the approach to Starr King so I pulled on my beater rock spikes about 0.5 miles before the summit. The mud on the first 1.5 miles of the trail is almost entirely rock hoppable so you can do the right thing and not widen the trail and keep your shoes mostly dry. I saw only one other brave soul (it was steadily misting/drizzling for most of the morning), two sopping wet grey jays near the Waumbek summit and one gorgeous bald eagle on 115A when I was headed home. I was about 50 yards from it so got to watch it for almost 15 minutes without bothering it; it was surveying the world from a tree that has not yet leafed out; eventually it soared off the tree and I got to see it majestically fly away. Epic. |
