Comments: Jewell Link is muddy (unavoidable) as there are few rocks for rock hopping. Jewell has mud but lots of rocks for rock hopping, so the mud is avoidable. Monorail didn’t start until 0.6 miles below treeline and was pleasantly stable, both on the ascent and later on the descent. Rock spikes were perfect; the ice is soft because temperatures are warm. I took my spikes off at treeline. Above treeline there are 5 sections of mushy snow at least 150’ long (the longest is 0.1 miles and is at the spring near the Mt Clinton Trail junction). For the descent of each of these sections I put on rock spikes; for me this was best. Most of you would gut it out with no traction!! I didn’t need traction ascending these spots.
There was some neat rime ice (that was melting) on a few of the trailsigns, as noted by MWOBs yesterday. I saw absolutely no one today, which somewhat surprised me. I hiked Jefferson completely on the spur of the moment (because “light and variable winds,” in an MWOBs forecast, gives me goosebumps and makes me want to move heaven and earth and adulting responsibilities to be above treeline) and I am super glad that I did because it was a beautiful day with no wind, no bugs, and fantastic footing!!
