| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Back 80: One large tree across the trail shortly below the cellar hole. Beyond that point there are some smaller blowdowns along the beaver ponds and closer to Elwell Trail. Back 80 Loop: One large stepover below the cellar hole and a small tree down just above the lower brook crossing. Elwell Trail: Between Old Dicey Rd. and Oregon Mtn. Trail, in the switchbacks, there's one messy blowdown partially in the trail. I trimmed it for easier access but more work is needed. Several scattered blowdowns between Carter-Gibbs Trail and Back 80 Trail. I briefly lost the trail west of Mowglis Mtn. where it dips to cross a muddy drainage. Blazing in this area is very faint and the footbed is not apparent due to light use. |

Black flies were buzzing about but weren't too bad due to the cooler temps. BUT. I also saw mosquitoes at lower elevations. |

Another glorious day in the Cardigan backcountry!
This loop (with two short out-and-backs) was mostly damp from the recent rains but was drying out quickly. The lower 0.8 mi. of Back 80 Trail up to the cellar hole was the wettest and muddiest section; this part is often wet anyway. Otherwise, just scattered bits of mud here and there.
Lots of moose scat out there and I did spot some recent bear scat that the flies were enjoying. Also, the hardwood forest in this area is loaded with trout lilies right now. Saw a few trillium but not too many.
As expected, I didn't see a single person until I got to the All Persons Trail. I did a short out-and-back on this one after returning on Back 80 Trail. Very nice work by AMC here. We need more accessible trails. |
