Up to and including Mt. Crawford, the trail is in great shape. Beyond that, it becomes rougher. There are more frequent blowdowns, lots of limbs and such scattered on the trail, etc. Just general uncleared winter debris. |

Well well well. This hike can be described almost exactly as two separate hikes: the first 2.5 miles up to and including Mt. Crawford, and then everything beyond that out towards Stairs and Resolution. Up to Crawford, summer conditions reign. There’s no remaining snow or ice, and the winter debris has been cleared. As soon as one proceeds along the Davis Path after the Mt. Crawford Spur, it’s like a switch flipped. That’s where patches of snow begin. There’s also more mud and water running on the trail. About a half a mile from Stairs Col, the monorail, which is extremely unstable and will collapse on you, became knee deep at points. By far the worst part of the trail is the Stairs Spur. I have honestly never hiked a 0.1 mile trail that made me question my will to live like that trail did today. It’s full all the way along with just…snow. It’s not really even a monorail as it isn’t compacted. It’s just rotten snow that you can’t avoid, and you will consistently be plunge knee deep, and at times thigh deep or (if you’re shorter) waist deep. Crazy as it sounds, I honestly would have happily carried snowshoes just for that 0.1 mile. I’m sure in a week it’ll be fine, but it kinda sucked today. Going up to Resolution only has one postholey section, and it’s short.
My recommendation is to grab Crawford now and give the other two another week or so. |
