Started from 19 Mile Brook afternoon of 5-16. The hike into Carter Notch Hut was mild with only one significant section of snow, did not require traction. I dumped most of my gear at the hut for a light weight run up Wildcat. Wildcat was the first sign of unpleasant spring condition with the expected full mix of ground conditions and occasional postholing. I put on spikes shortly before the summit and wore them for most of the descent. A relaxing night was spent at the hut. The next morning I set out for the Carter's. The initial steep section of Carter-Moriah was largely clear of snow and water making for smooth travels. As the trail levels out snow increased significantly with both stable and unstable monorail. The snowpack near Carter Dome summit was over 3 feet deep. The remainder of trail over the remaining summits was a sample of everything spring had to offer. Be advised this will make for tough trucking and slow going. I put spikes on and took them off a couple times. Snowshoes may be useful in isolated areas although Im not sure they are worth the hassle with constantly changing ground conditions. Lots of postholing along the way. By the time I reached Imp trail snow was largely gone and I could go back to making good time. Don't be fooled, there is still LOTS of snow at elevations. |
