Comments
Comments: It was a cold and WET day for bushwhacking these peaks! Based on previous reports it seemed like heading straight for East peak could be thick, so I opted to try a different route and headed to the col between East and South, then turned east to hit the peak. The woods were reasonable, never terribly thick, lots of 3-4' spruce with nothing pokey, allowing for slow, but steady progress. However, there's a major caveat, those short spruce trees can hold a lot of moisture in their needles and given the rain yesterday I was soaked in short order. From East peak I headed straight at South Peak with more of the same moderately thick, soaking wet spruces. Rather than aim for the ridges to the north/south as others have mentioned, I picked my way up the scrambly section, trending right and hit the summit cone just north of the recognized high point. From South peak to Huntington was more of the same moderately thick spruce, with the added pleasure of knee to thigh deep snow that I regularly postholed into. I had planned on 'whacking to West Peak, but my jaw muscles were getting tired from all the shivering and I bailed north off the peak to Hancock Notch trail where I promptly swapped out for dry layers and an extra jacket! A tough bushwhack, but nothing terribly thick or difficult - however, if you're planning this one, consider the weather. Looks like I'll be back for West peak!
