Comments
Comments: Ammonoosuc was super pleasant at first, flowers blooming and mostly dry trail. Then I got wet feet immediately in the first crossing before the trail from the Cog lot joins it, but it was warm enough that I didn’t mind, then promptly got soaked at all other crossings from the Gem Pool to the hut. The snow started slightly above the Gem Pool and was a nightmare - though I managed without spikes going up, I could just about dig my feet into the holes in the trail. Just before the hut, I fell into what felt like waist deep snow with ankle deep water running beneath it and leaped out to scramble up the snow bank to a dry rock. My dog was unfazed and only slipped a little bit. I can only imagine this area getting worse as it melts and would avoid this trail for a few more weeks.
Once we reached the treeline, the alpine zone was divine and then heading down Jewell was so amazingly dry and kind on my knees, I professed my love for that trail as I descended much more quickly than I had crawled up Ammonoosuc.
A wonderful, warm day and though I was trying to avoid most of the spring snow, I have no regrets at getting my grid into triple digits! If you are only hiking Washington, an amazing, easy, and dry route would be to just take Jewell trail out and back for now.
