I was able to drive to the height of land in a low clearance mini cooper. It took some care and planning in a few spots, but it was doable. Magalloway and Smith Brook Road are dreamy dirt roads. |

A fine day to finally get this one - and a bonus! #99 of the NH100! It took some care and planning on the road but it was doable. We launched from the height of land and found the fisherman's path to Stub Pond. From here we found a mix of herd path and open woods to the summit. We made it from the car to the summit in less than thirty minutes without even trying, super easy whack. We took a different bearing and made it back to the road in short order. We launched from the other side of the road, finding no herd paths but relatively open wood, some pokey stuff but nothing bad. It gets better away from the wood. I found no evidence of a line described in earlier reports, but it doesn't mean its not there. We found good moving to about 20 feet below the summit, which was in sight. We then spooked a highly agitated cow right in this open area. She looped to our right in a large arc and we thought that was the end of it. We stopped a moment and talked, made noise, to let her know our location. We could hear her crashing around us. She then looped back, utilizing the same herd paths we had just came up on, in a direct bearing towards us. Putting trees between us, she then cut away from us, again looping in the same area she had prior done. We again stopped, talked and she did not make another pass at us. We found the summit - of which the canister is affixed to a blowdown that is facing the ground so hard to spot. We took a completely different bearing off the summit, nowhere near the location she had ran to and had a very uneventful descent. That escalated very quickly! |
