Peaks Mt. Garfield, Galehead Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Garfield Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail, Frost Trail, Gale River Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 25, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Garfield Trail parking lot was significantly overflowed by 8:30. Presumably this was a function of Memorial day weekend, but maybe it's also a function of warmer weather. I haven't seen parking lots filled like this since ... the last time it was the oppressively hot season.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water crossings were rock-hoppable.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One major and one moderate piece of blowdown on the ridge between Garfield and Galehead. Both had somewhat established walkarounds. More minor pieces of blowdown descending the Gale River trail that could be stepped over.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A few dogs seen on the trail. All looked happy :-)
Bugs
Bugs: They cometh ... but they weren't bad. A little bug spray kept them at bay. More bugs at water crossings, but they were manageable.

Comments
Comments: There was a little bit of snow and ice seen off trail, but we're firmly in summer. Lots of happy people at the summit of Garfield. Didn't see anyone wearing traction. Little bit of mud, but nothing deep or pervasive.

Starting to see the beginning of new mushroom sightings!
