Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, May 29, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Giant potholes at the entrance to the Rattle River parking lot. Use caution and go slow with your low clearance cars.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings were ok, though a couple of us got wet feet after slipping on the rock hops. I wouldn't want to do the first big one in high water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a fairly large hemlock down just over 2 miles in on the Rattle River Trail. The part that landed in the trail is top vs. trunk. This has resulted in something that can't be climbed over. People have been going around, but due to steepness, this is not easy either. Removing this one will be a fair bit of work.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Couple dogs with us today, no issues.
Bugs
Bugs: Not bad. There were a few around as we came down and temps were warmer. I did find one tick attached to my leg after getting down. Not surprising as the Kenduskeag Trail is a bit grown in and brushy.

Comments
Comments: The mud on Kenduskeag is significant in places. It is mostly avoidable with care. However, one in our group went in over his knees. The bog bridges were slippery. By the time we came back, they had dried somewhat and were a little better. We were cautious.
