Trails
Trails: Piper Trail, Weetamoo Trail, Hammond Trail, Liberty Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, June 4, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: 3 cars in the lot when I arrived at 9am, 4 cars when I finished at about 3:20pm. Have a feeling this would be a full lot on weekends though, and there is no street parking available.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One crossing on Weetamoo trail easily rock hopped. The two other crossings which are on Piper trail have bridges.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All trails in great shape! A couple of small blowdowns on Piper trail, but all extremely easy to navigate. Any major blowdowns have been cleaned up. The signage does not always align with other signs in terms of the mileage, but the differences are only 0.1 or 0.2 miles, so it doesn't really make a big difference.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: The bugs were not too bad in the lowlands, just a few mosquitos and horse flies. On summit the black flies were brutal, almost unbearable. Upper slopes of Piper had some black flies but as long as you keep moving they don't really bother you.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Gorgeous day for a hike. Saw a few trillium flowers left, but for the most part they have all faded. However, clintonia and lady slippers (pink and white) are in full bloom, so don't be discouraged if you're looking for some wildflowers. A few wood asters have opened as well as some star flowers. Almost had summit to myself being a Tuesday, very quiet trails. Nothing too significant to report today. All the trails seem to have dried up over the past week or two which has made for some easy brook crossings and very little mud or standing water on the trails, though there were a few small areas that were still hanging on to some moisture. Just watch out for the bugs, but it's bug season so it's what's expected. Lots of spiderwebs in the forest, gained a solid coating breaking most of the trails this morning. Views to Mt. Washington show that there is still a small amount of snow left on the higher summits, but no snow whatsoever to be found on Chocoroua.
