Absolutely fantastic day in the mountains. Wildcat Ridge Trail is very steep most of the way up to Wildcat D. The trail was dry for the most part and I don't recall having to climb over or go around any trees all day. Lots of ups and downs between Wildcat D and A which can take a lot out of you - this hike is around 4k feet over the course of 9 or so miles. As noted above, the black flies were horrendous any time I was in the open although in the woods they were not too bothersome. The views across Pinkham Notch to Washington were excellent from the summit of D as well as numerous points along the trail and the overlook from A summit into Carter Notch quite dramatic as well. I took the westernmost ski trails (Upper Catapult -> Upper Wildcat -> Middle Wildcat -> Wild Kitten) down to the Square Ledge link trail which I would recommend if you want some different scenery on the return hike. |
