Took MKT 1.2 miles to HOL and whacked due west through enjoyable, mossy, ferny woods to Mt Kineo’s recognized HP. Enjoyed stand up views into the Sandwich Range. Once back to MKT, we began the wac for MK East Peak just north of the HOL, trying to avoid the large area of hobble bush. Completely different story heading east, lots of bumps, cliff bands, blowdowns, hobble bush etc.. Nothing too terrible, but much slower going. We started to notice blue blazes and followed them due east along the ridge as best we could. According to GAIA, we were following the WMNF boundary line and so we believe that is what these markers are for. Ran into a snomo trail running N/S and took that until reaching the field mentioned in many other posts and followed that for a short stretch until making the short wac to the East HP (see note above).
On the descent we followed the N/S snomo trail as it meandered west and northwest until a fork with a couple bog bridges that turned to more of a clear footpath that headed due north. We took the right turn hoping it would take us on a beeline to the parking lot. This worked until the footpath turned due east at another experimental field area. From here we headed back into the woods on a bee line northwest to our cars, finding the worst hobble bush conditions of the day. For about .4 miles, there was no getting around them, so we just fought our way through them. Right around 7 miles for the loop. A great choice by Coolies on Top to avoid the rain occurring all over the region as we enjoyed blue skies for the entire hike. |
