I took the first Tram to the Cannon summit at 9am to start the day. I’ve climbed this summit twice (no desire to do it again, even though it’s a great view), because the point of today’s hike was to redline area trails. Descending from the summit I did an out-and-back to grab the Lonesome Lake trail then continued on Kinsman Ridge over the Cannonballs to the four-way junction. Continued on the Kinsman Pond trail past the shelter and tent sites (very nice area, well signed) and paused at Kinsman Pond for a while. The trail itself runs in a dry river bed at times and many herd paths have been created in this area. Sat on a footbridge at Lonesome Lake for lunch (didn’t go to the hut this time) and watched many fish jump while the black flies hustled me along. Dodge Cutoff and a 2 mile section of the Pemi trail were by far the least traveled of the day while the lower section of Hi-Cannon and Lonesome Lake were the most traveled. Felt like a long day. |
