The Whitehouse trailhead parking is just north The Flume off route 3. In the morning the outhouse stench wafted over the beginning of the Whitehouse Trail. In the PM I did not smell the odor so either the outhouse was cleaned or the wind direction changed. |

Some tree falls across the Liberty Spring Trail that posed no exceptional effort to get by. One is high enough above the surface to permit easy passage on the edge of the trail. Another near the most significant brook crossing was a straddle over.
The Liberty Spring Trail and the Franconia Brook Trail are heavily used and are significantly eroded down to a rocky surface with some trenching. This is not a new condition. |

There were some black flies if one is stationary. I donned the head net upon arriving at the Franconia Ridge Trail. |

Much of the Whitehouse Trail had damp surfaces. The Liberty Spring and Franconia Ridge Trails were generally dry. I have seen the Liberty Spring Trail much muddier in the past. The Liberty Spring Trail for much of its distance is a relatively steep rock hop. The col between Mt Liberty and Mt Flume is rather deep that results in a 1,000 foot elevation gain if one traverses back and forth between the two peaks. There is now a clear alternative path that bypasses Mt Liberty on the Franconia Ridge Trail. It is so clear that it appears to be an authorized alternative to the trail over Mt Liberty. I used the traditional Franconia Ridge Trail when heading to Mt Flume from Mt Liberty. This route features a tricky ledge passage. On the way back from Mt Flume I used the new bypass.
Nice views from the open summits although there was some haziness.
Many hikers out today including a lot of kids. A group of about half a dozen kids from 4 to 9 years old hiked up Flume Slide Trail with their mothers. There were also other kids that up this same route today. Met several groups of hikers on a multi-day Pemi Loop trip. One AT thru hiker from GA. |
