Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn’t see any today. Imagine this would be an easy hike for a dog until the last 0.2 up to the summit. A lot of big drop-offs once on the summit so watch Fido carefully!
Bugs
Bugs: Weren’t bad going up but I was bathed in Deep Woods Off. A little worse at the summit but the breeze helped. Reapplied my bug juice and flies seemed worse coming down in late afternoon.

Comments
Comments: First couple miles were easy with some beautiful hemlocks and following the South Branch of Gale River. There were a few big patches of mud but nothing you can’t easily get through. All crossings of Thompson Brook and Spruce Brook were easy to rock hop. The third mile was a little steeper and more rocky and still not too difficult. The climb eases again for the fourth mile as you travel the switchbacks. Also more running water in the fourth mile. The ascent is a bit more steep for the final 0.8 mile before the ridge. The summit is only about 0.2 of a mile once you reach the ridge but it’s a steeper climb over big boulders-probably the most challenging part of the hike. Once at the summit, it’s a bit of a scramble to get up to the old firetower remains. Gorgeous views despite being partly cloudy. Can see Garfield Ridge over to Galehead, the Twins, Galehead, the Bonds, Carrigain, Passaconaway, Tripyramids, Osceola, Tecumseh, Owl’s Head, Flume, Liberty, Franconia Ridge, and many, many more peaks. Extensive views for a relatively easy hike!
