Comments
Comments: This is day one of a three day report.
We started out from Pinkham Notch Center at 7:00am, and took Old Jackson Road to Madison Gulf, and then up Great Gulf Trail to the campsite just above the Six Husband/Wamsutta Junction. AT trail was in fair shape considering the traffic it sees, and the bridge is still superior. Splitting off Madison Gulf, Great Gulf had good footing, with some mud and running water on trail. Chandler Brook was easy enough to cross, as had been our biggest concern for the day following the rains. After a rough set up of camp, we took the day packs we had attached to our overnights and made our way back down to the Wamsutta junction. This trail has seen more recent brushing, with all but the top quarter or so mile below the auto road being spectacularly clear. This is a rough trail, with a couple more vertical and technical sections. I would not plan to use this route as a descent. Crossing the auto road, we noted there were still cars being sent up, and took it as a good sign we might beat the impending rain. A few seasonal stragglers on the short stretch of the Alpine Garden trail for the flora lovers, otherwise not much of note for this far eastern end of the trail. Nelson Crag was the typical northerns talus trail, and we cranked it out as quickly as we could with a few rolls of thunder. On the auto road we had rain, until we reached Chandler Brook which was surprisingly dry! This was still slow going as there are plenty of slippery roots and wet rocks to pay attention to, as well as the boulders on the top part of the trail. We were happy to return to camp, and slept like logs as it showered.
