Peaks Mt. Moosilauke, Mt. Moosilauke - South Peak, NH
Trails
Trails: Gorge Brook Trail, Carriage Road, South Peak Spur, Hurricane Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, June 28, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Very full and busy on a sunny Friday. I started around noon, so enough of the morning hikers had finished, leaving plenty of open spaces very close to the lodge.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All water crossings and bridges were easy and in good condition, with the exception of the Hurricane Trail. This trail has not seen heavy traffic this season, and many crossings are damaged, but easily passable on a dry day (see Trail Maintenance Notes below).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Gorge Brook and Carriage Rd in great shape. Some mud was avoidable, but trails mostly dry and clear of obstructions. On the descent, Carriage Rd between Snapper Trail and Hurricane Trail has not seen heavy traffic so far this season. Fairly overgrown with encroaching undergrowth and grasses, and some mud. There were also a few small/medium blowdowns, but they were passable. On Hurricane Trail back to Ravine Lodge - several of the wooden crossings over drainages are rotted and damaged/broken. One was completely broken, and others looked too dubious to trust! The weather was dry and the drainages were low, so it was possible to walk through them without getting wet or muddy.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Several. Nice to see folks had their dogs leashed in the alpine zone.
Bugs
Bugs: Not bad. Lower Carriage Rd and Hurricane Trail were a bit buggy, but nothing bug spray couldn't handle.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lots of items left behind at the trailhead bridge.

Comments
Comments: Great day, great hike. Always amazing when the parking is packed, but the trails aren't crowded. There was a large group on the summit that did not demonstrate much trail etiquette, which was disappointing (very loud, and monopolized the summit for 20 minutes without moving out of the way for others).
