The summits of Jefferson and Clay were filled with large wasp-like insects. They were flying all around the Jefferson summit and nesting in the cairn at the summit of Mt Clay. They seem to prefer summit cairns as we did not see any between the summits...perhaps they have high standards and prefer a hive with only the best view. They were territorial, large, not very friendly, and followed us. One from the Mt. Clay cairn hitched a ride for a very tense 0.1 mile on my hiking partner's shirt. It then moved to his backpack, so he dropped it on the trail and moved away. It stayed there for another 5 minutes before moving along. |

Mostly posting about the wasps...glad we had my epipen just in case they do sting! See below for a link to the picture of it. After looking it up online, I think they may be giant Birch Sawflies, but they could also be some sort of stinging wasp, so be careful. Any identification for my own curiosity is appreciated!
It was a gorgeous day for a hike and the Jefferson to Washington hike surely delivered! |
