Trails
Trails: Garfield Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, July 2, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The small lot off the Gale River Loop Road was full so I parked nearby. The road was in good condition.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Thompson and Spruce Brooks easily crossed on rocks. Water level not particularly high.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No obstructions that impeded hiking. Saw recent cut of fallen trees down low on Garfield Trail including a delimbing of a tree that is about 6' above the ground. There are a couple of spots with a corduroy trail to pass through some wet spots. The upper section of the trail is very rocky as all the soil has been eroded away over the years. I didn't notice any water bars in the upper parts of the Garfield Trail. The trail sign for the Garfield Ridge Trail does not indicate the direction to Mt Garfield. I think for most hikers this is not a problem but in the past I have met some people that were confused on which way to go to get to Mt Garfield.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. One couple was looking for their dog as I passed by. I later saw them with their dog on a leash.
Bugs
Bugs: Not many.

Comments
Comments: Much of the trail was dry. The spots with mud were not boot suckers. Some water was running down a short stretch of trail. It was not extensive run-off like in the spring snow melt.
The are sufficient spots for foot placement on the short steep section of the Garfield Ridge Trail as you approach the summit.
Lots of ledge space at the top of Mt Garfield to accommodate a large crowd. Great views, especially of the peaks surrounding the western Pemi Wilderness area.
Didn't meet any AT hikers on the short section of the Garfield Ridge Trail. Lots of New England hikers out today.
I only saw a few wildflowers at the summit and none aside the trails.
