Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Waded shin deep through the river at the start of the Sawyer Pond trail. All other crossings were dry and easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There’s a 3 to 4 mile stretch of the Hancock Notch trail that is gnarly, slippery, overgrown, and inhospitable. All other miles were in good shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn’t see any dogs today, but this route would be fine.
Bugs
Bugs: Yes. They weren’t plentiful, but they were persistent and annoying.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Picked up a granola bar wrapper that must have fallen out of someone’s pocket. It was right in the middle of the trail. No, you can’t have it back.

Comments
Comments: Used super lightweight water shoes to wade through the river at the start of the Sawyer Pond trail. Easy crossing. Didn’t need the water shoes again. Sawyer Pond trail was a quick and easy walk in the woods. The shelter and tent sites at the pond were very nice. One tent was set up but I didn’t see or hear anyone. The Sawyer River trail and the first mile of the Hancock Notch trail continued to be nice and easy. From there, the Hancock Notch trail turned into an almost-abandoned route that consisted of slippery rocks, tangled roots, and pathways that were mostly obscured by ferns and overgrown branches. The last mile before reaching the junction with the Cedar Brook trail was less gnarly. The two miles out to the Kanc were like a sidewalk due to the volume of people doing the Hancocks. It was a relatively quick 14.1 miles. Also, I ran into a trail crew coordinator, Jen, who was very nice and told me that a new crew had just arrived and that they’d be working on the Hancock Notch trail as well as other sections of other trails in need in the area over the next week. That’s hard work and much appreciated.
