Main Trail above the Brook Trail junction is suffering from severe erosion and trail creep. Brook Trail along the ridge could use some refreshed blazes and/or additional cairns. Brook Trail below the Belknap Range Trail junction to the first brook crossing is in very poor condition, I'm sad to say. Massive erosion and extensive trail creep has made the corridor 20-30 feet wide in places. The actual footbed is washed out much of the way. Reconstruction of the existing route or building a whole new route are both very costly propositions. |

Early bird gets the summit or whatever that saying is. I needed to check on a few things here so I started around 7:30 to get ahead of the masses.
The new lower 0.5 mi. section of Main Trail is still under construction and is closed to the public. A well-signed detour guides hikers on a temporary route for 0.4 mi., where the trail joins its original route above the new section.
Overall the conditions were very dry despite the storms rolling through yesterday. Hazy views from the top and it was quiet enough that I could hang out for a little bit; only two other people when I arrived at the summit.
On the descent, a steady stream of people were headed up, many without packs or water. When I got back to the car, vehicles were lined up far along the highway. |
