Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Appalachia parking lot off route 2 in Randolph had all slots on the pavement filled at 7:00AM. I parked in a dirt spot in the lot area. Many other vehicles that arrived later parked along route 2.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossing of Spur Brook on Randolph Path and Snyder Brook on Watson Path were easy on rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in generally good condition. Small tree across the short side trail to Chandler Fall about 5' above ground. Easy to duck under. A folding saw could take care of this tree. A birch of about 1' diameter across Valley Way at about 4' above ground at 2+ miles from the trailhead. Not too difficult to duck under except it may be a problem for a large pack. Vegetation intruding into Watson Path on upper sections of the trail. Well cleared drainages on Amphibrach and Spur trails.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. Paws may be sensitive to the abrasive mica schist on the summit cones.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: I used some of the lesser used paths in some parts of the hike including Amphibrach, Hincks, and Watson Path. These RMC trails that receive less traffic tend to be wilder. The descent on the Watson Path is especially steep and rough (not recommended when there are strong cold NW winds).
Gray Knob caretaker Lea was not in when I was at the camp. I did not stop at Madison Spring Hut as it was crowded.
The route I took included many waterfalls; Cold Brook Fall, Coldspur Ledges, Chandler Fall, and Duck Fall.
Many hikers out today including couples originally from Ukraine and from Poland. Met hiker originally from Missouri but is happy to be in New England. Most hikers were local including Biddeford ME. Many hikers on overnights at the Hut, The Perch, and Valley Way tent site. One hiker from Laconia was on a late start Presidential traverse relying on the full moon.
Saw goldenrod above tree line and Indian Pipe down low.
Great views above tree line.
