A FINE day in the forest was had. After a few scores of summits of Moose, I still am finding new ways to get there. Today's adventure was put in my head by an account in "The Moosilaukee Reader, Vol 1" written by Thomas Wentworth Higginson about an 1880 adventure into Jobildunk (sic - spurious attribution as well, its not in Jobildunc). A far more recent vintage report was penned in 2015 by The Mountain Wanderer and another in 2021. So not a lot to go on in the last 144 years. Pleiades is an open star cluster, also known Seven Sisters - likely how this got its name for its seven cascades, each nicer then the next. The pinnacle is a large, 107 foot (according to a 19th century measurement) cascade/waterfall. I dubbed it 'Higginson Cascade' for the authors namesake. We good to moderate woods and footing through our trek, opting to utilize Gorge Brook's bed for times. Be mindful of slick algae and plenty of opportunities to post hole through mossy rocks. Through a series of on-the-fly decisions, we serendipitously found ANOTHER section of the abandoned Gorge Brook trail. This pops out at the old winter cabin foundation. We stuck to dense krumoltz here to try and find a suitable course to rock-hop through alpine veg/sedge, of which we where successful in doing so. No handstands on alpine plants for us. Nothing of note on the way out other than hordes. |
