Today was a counterclockwise loop around Owl’s Head. The Lincoln Woods trail slog was ok first thing in the morning. The Franconia Brook trail was a very pleasant surprise - a flat, easy, pine needle carpet with moderate traffic (met 12+ people). Most folks were coming from the 13 Falls tent site. The Lincoln Brook trail was more of what I expected - lightly traveled, some mud, narrow in spots, but easy to navigate. Didn’t summit Owl’s Head…just walked on by. Took the Black Pond bushwhack, which is in far better shape than some trails. Took Black Pond out to Lincoln Woods then began the slog out, which was brutal. This was a 19 mile (give or take) route that had little elevation, lots of waterfalls and river action, and the Franconia Brook trail section past its junction with the Lincoln Brook trail was really great. |
