Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Success, NH
Trails
Trails: Success Trail, Mahoosuc Trail, herd path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, August 3, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Success Pond Rd. is in good shape, for a dirt road: plenty of loose 3-inch rocks on the road, but no major potholes. An ordinary car should have no trouble doing 20-25mph along it. There are a few pull-offs on Success Pond Rd. at and near the trailhead where a few cars can park. When we arrived at 10:15am Saturday, we were the first cars there.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Some of the bog bridges on Mahoosuc Trail are in poor condition, or partly sinking in the mud.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: On the Mahoosuc Trail north of Mt. Success, there is one place where one must scramble 12 ft. almost vertically, with a resting point halfway up. It is probably doable if you can help your dog with this.
Bugs
Bugs: Didn't seem to be biting today, surprisingly.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There are two black rubber boots with pink soles hanging upside down on tree branches on Success Trail, between the Outlook and the junction with the Mahoosuc Trail.

Comments
Comments: So much mud on the Mahoosuc Trail just south of the Mt. Success Trail! There are bog bridges, but some of them are in poor condition, or partly sinking in the mud. With a good sense of balance (or poles) and with some jumping, one can avoid most of the mud, but it is not easy.

We visited the plane wreckage that is about 0.5 miles SSW of the summit. The bushwhack leading there, shown on Caltopo, starts about 0.3 miles south of the summit along the Mahoosuc Trail. We had trouble finding exactly where the bushwhack starts [note: bushwhacks don't "start" - herd paths start], but after going a little ways south off the trail, we found a path clearly marked with many yellow blazes, leading west to the crash site. The wreckage, now 70 years old, is impressive. Its location is essentially the southernmost point of the 3420-ft. contour of the mountain.
