Trails
Trails: Bobcat Trail, Coot Trail, Outlook spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, August 17, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Magalloway Road is in good condition. Tower Road is somewhat rougher, with plenty of rocks, some potholes, and one dip that needed to be taken slowly. Definitely doable for my Forester. No sign for Tower Road at its junction with Magalloway Road, so watch your odometer carefully.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of mud and erosion on Bobcat Trail. No sign for Magalloway Spring Spur - more on that below.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a few. Should be fine, but watch them on the Outlook spur since the outlooks have very sheer dropoffs.
Bugs
Bugs: Only a few. Not an issue.

Comments
Comments: Magalloway turned out to be a hopping place today - 5 or 6 vehicles at the trailhead when I showed up. Took Bobcat Trail up - it is quite muddy and eroded in places, and brushy in other places, but not difficult to follow. It is somewhat steep in places and has some slippery rocks, but nothing terrible. The upper part of Coot Trail is easy. At the summit, the Outlook spur is well signed, and the view from the outlooks is excellent. There are three outlooks, and the trail continues past the third outlook just a little bit (this part is quite brushy) and then clearly ends. Upon returning to the summit clearing, I attempted to find the Spring Spur. I tried three separate herd paths leading from the summit, but all three petered out quickly. I suggest that the Magalloway Spring Spur be either signed (as the Cabot Spring Spur now fortunately is) or removed from the Redlining Spreadsheet.

I took Coot Trail down. It is steep in places and has substantial sections with very loose, gravelly footing - not the nicest. But it's direct and didn't take too much time.

Met several groups of hikers, some of whom were either working on or had completed the 52WAV. Some hikers were from NH, but there was one from MA and a group of college students from San Diego! It was nice to see so many people willing to do the long drive to enjoy Magalloway.
