| Comments: |
Some significant erosion noted in a few areas. Blazes on the slabs of both Middle Sister and Chocorua really need to be repainted.
This was our first time on the Champney Falls Trail and the first time up Middle Sister, but it won't be the last! Aside from some wet areas after the rains (especially on the rocks), Champney Falls is a nice trail. Middle Sister was gorgeous and we had that summit to ourselves! Once in the saddle between First Sister and Chocorua, we started running into the hoards. For the first time in my 20+ year hiking journey, I saw someone hiking in cowboy boots......that's right, COWBOY BOOTS! This person was up near the junction of Champney Falls/Middle Sister trail, so he wasn't just going to the falls. Not sure how those worked on the slabs for him..... I lost count of the amount of other underprepared people in cotton T-shirts or polo shirts, jeans, no backpacks/water, etc. We also saw off-leash dogs fighting and not listening to voice commands from their owners. On Chocorua's exposed slabs, many people weren't even bothering to find the blazes and ultimately took their own paths to the summit. I will also say that we've noticed that courtesy on the trails is gone. The majority of people don't bother to yield the right of way to another hiker, let alone say anything/acknowledge you, and it's very disheartening. If you're planning to do this hike on a busy day, prepare yourself for the zoo you'll have to contend with. |
