A successful summit of Mt. Bemis was had this afternoon. I read Section Hiker’s report of an abandoned trail starting at 1800’ and going to at least 3000’ so thought I’d give it a shot. I found this trail but wasn’t sure at first because it starts heading east instead of west for a bit before switching back, then it was straight along the ridge at an easy grade. After the open meadow at 3000’ it changed direction and got thick but I stayed on it, just looking down for footprints all the way to the tower. It was a short whack to the canister and back. The view into the Dry River just below the tower was the highlight! I did lose the trail briefly on the way down from the tower, and running late in the day I checked my recorded track to get back on the trail. Getting off trail would not be fun here. |
