Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Haystack Road is in good condition. The small lot at the end of the road was mostly full at 9:00AM. Parking is only allowed on one side of Haystack Road to facilitate passage of vehicles on the roadway.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I found that the best crossing of Little River was a few steps upstream from the official trail because the rocks had a flat surface with only a shallow flow water overtopping one rock. All other water crossings were easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is generally in good condition. The North Twin trail no longer traverses the two lower crossings of the Little River. It now uses portions of the old herd path with some variation in the route. I found the new route to be easy to hike. It includes a wood staircase and some rocks steps. As with most reroutes, there are pockets of mud that may harden over time with possible follow-up improvements such as strategically placed rocks in the mud. As usual, there are mud spots at the beginning of the ascent up from the Little River and on North Twin Spur below South Twin. I was able to step on embedded rocks in these to avoid the worst of the mud. Most of these rocks are smeared in mud so are not prominent.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. There was a husky out on the trails today.
Bugs

Comments
Comments: The most important consideration in hiking the Twins from Haystack Road is the water levels on the Little River. The water level and water flow on the Little River were not high today so the crossing was not difficult. Wetness on the river rocks can make them potentially slippery so care must be exercised (this will be particularly important in the upcoming ice season).
The significant elevation gain begins after crossing Little River. The grade is never extreme. In some places on the North Twin Trail there are small loose rocks that may move underfoot. But this is not a major risk.
There are fantastic views from both outlook ledges on North Twin and at the open summit of South Twin.
I hiked up to North Twin with a hiker from Pelham NH I had previously met four years ago on Zealand Mountain. Hiked down from North Twin with Greg from Ct. On South Twin met hikers from Kittery and Saco ME and Quebec.
Not much foliage Fall color.
