| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
These trails are wilderness-ey, so expect more primitive conditions. Erosion is taking its toll on the very steep sections of Walden and Square Ledge trails. Upper Walden on Passaconaway has collapsed rock steps from the erosion. The early WODC trail builders certainly knew where to locate paths to make them "interesting" but this was way before sustainability was a thing. |

What a gorgeous day for a big loop in the Sandwich Range. It's been quite a while since I'd been on these trails and I was quickly reminded how steep and rough it is in here! The cuckoo bananapants section of Walden Trail coming down the south side of Nanamocomuck is extremely steep and takes care to descend. The section of Walden heading up the Passaconaway summit cone really makes you work for it as well. Granted it's been a while since I was on Passaconaway but I remember the tiny high point cairn being in the small clearing at the end of the spur path. Today it was several yards away on another bump; hard to tell if it was any higher.
Hibbard still has no view from the summit. :D The viewpoint at the top of the steep climb up to Square Ledge is growing in but the near-summit ledge is still nice. Visiting these two peaks gets me closer to completing a fourth round of the "59WAV", which I'd like to do this year.
Aside from two hikers I met on the Passaconaway view spur I didn't see another soul all day.
All of these trails were 99.9% dry with just a few muddy spots here and there. |
