| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Sawyer River Road is closed because of a washout. This adds 2 miles to the trip to and from the actual trailhead (4 miles roundtrip) up the dirt road. It's possible to walk or bike around the washout. I walked, but you could get to the trailhead quicker with a bike. The parking lot on Route 302 was basically full at 9:45 am on a Saturday. I think I got just about the last space. Get there early on a weekend. |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
The trail crosses a brook about 2 miles in from the dirt road. The water level was low enough to cross by stepping carefully on rocks at a ford, with some of the rocks barely submerged. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail is not well marked, but it's heavily traveled enough that it's easy to follow. |

| Comments: |
This was a straightforward hike, no real issues to report. The road walk adds a couple hours to the trip. I am not the fastest hiker, but also not the slowest, and it took me just over 8 hours roundtrip, including a brief break at the top and shorter breaks along the way. Start early in the darker months. From the actual trailhead, it's a little over two miles of gentle gradient, mostly along streams, through the valley forest. This stretch of the trail has some muddy patches where you can't avoid getting your feet a bit muddy, but you can avoid water in your shoe. Then it's about 2.5 hard miles of steep, rocky ascent before you reach the ridgeline, which offers stunning views of the Presidentials. A good, challenging hike. |
