| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Where did all of the above-treeline cairns go? I have hiked Chocorua countless times, but have not been up Champney Falls Trail without snow in a few years. Above treeline on Piper there are scant old blazes and only two sad, toppled over cairns. The rest of the cairns are entirely missing. Was the plan to completely remove them? There are endless trampled herd paths through the alpine vegetation, which made my heart sad, but I understand that they are there because hikers don’t know where to go. This might not be a new problem, but I personally think that it is a problem. The cairns were really pretty and were essential to navigate the above treeline portion of Piper. If you have a cairn party and need help, count me in!
The trail junction signs are entirely intact and oriented perfectly so route finding below treeline is no problem. There are no blowdowns or other problems. |

I hiked Chocorua for sunrise, noting that I watched it from a ledge just below the summit, because I don’t love that last scramble, LOL! I passed one pair of hikers on my ascent, and never saw them again. Their car was still in the lot when I got back so hopefully they went to the Sisters and are ok.
Chocorua is a great choice for sunrise because it’s a short hike to 360 degree views. |
