Comments: A FINE day in George Van Dyke's woods, with a visit to Henry's as well. A few weeks ago on another trip I noticed the log line continued at the river crossing. That got me thinking. After a few weeks of research - and teaming up with another history nerd in the group, we felt like we may try and find remnants of the Little River Railroad, that ceased operation in 1900, as well as the Little River Trail, abandoned circa 1950. We crossed the river at the 1.9 mile mark, and where the trail bends sharply uphill, we continued to follow the river. We found what we where looking for - but loose and easy to lose as it crosses several times. Did find some telegraph wire at an obvious crossing. We also found a copious amount of artifacts that all wanted to give us tetanus. Some really cool items like a few cogs, a step that connected to something triangular, yolk, multiple sled runners, buckets, coal shovels (flat), stoves, chains, hooks, and more. Little River Trail has to see some traffic, I am thinking the moose have adopted keeping it clear. We then popped up towards the real star of the show today - the talus slope on the west side of Zealand. What a stunner, but man you earned your turn getting onto it. It's quite loose. Not Whitewall loose, but they are some monster boulders that you feel like the Incredible Hulk, because they rock and roll under my massive 130 pound frame. There is seemingly only one escape route off the talus, as it's a sheer cliff wall/band across the top of the ridge here. We found an osceola like chimney/chute which was wildly loose and only one at a time safe passage. From here, we made our way along the broad ridge crest through scrappy woods to the summit of Zealand, popping out at a 48 part. Fantastic views of the Twins and Bond proper from the talus vista. This finished ever-calendar-day 4k for me for September. 332/366.
