Parking/Access Road Notes

Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: About 1/4 mile up Huntington Ravine Trail, the main stream crossing was a little tricky, but maybe it is because we tried going a little upstream, up over and down a big boulder, before crossing, instead of crossing directly. If doing it again, I'd cross directly.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Blowdown (can go under) about 3/4 mile up Huntington Ravine Trail. More blazes on Huntington Ravine Trail would make it safer. There are several places on the headwall where there is no visible blaze and one has to explore and guess to figure out where the trail goes.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Huntington Ravine is not for dogs. There are deep gaps between boulders that could swallow a dog, and nearly vertical chimneys.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There was a shirt hanging on a tree on Lion Head Trail, near Lion Head (just below it, I think). We left it there.

Comments
Comments: On Thurs Sept 26 there was 2.5 inches of rain, but Friday and Saturday were dry, with Saturday mostly sunny, so we decided to try Huntington Ravine Trail on Sunday Sept 29. The scrambles and slabs and chimneys were dry, except for the last chimney just below the junction with Alpine Garden Trail - that chimney, because of its more northward-facing orientation, was still totally wet, but that one is not in a "no-fall zone" and it has enough handholds to be manageable by hikers without rock climbing experience. So we all managed it without much difficulty. For me, the sketchiest part was instead just below that, where it seems that one has to skirt around a boulder on a narrow path with a drop-off on the right, without good handholds.

The steep part of the Lion Head Trail summer route (mostly above the ladder) was wet in many places, so we had to take it slowly while descending. The ladder itself is in great condition.
