| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Hardly anyone there at Great Gulf. Warning: There is a powerful odor in the bathroom. I almost fainted from the ammonia fumes. You’ll need a clothespin for your nose if you go in there. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |

|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
One critical crossing on Six Husbands trail at Jefferson Ravine but the water was low so it was an easy step across. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Wamsutta and Buttress are a tight squeeze in the upper parts. Definitely could use a trim back. |

| Lost and Found: |
I lost the tip of one trekking pole, on the bottom 2 miles of Great Gulf I think. I saw someone else’s pole tip on a cairn (on Jefferson I think) and some underwear at Madison hut. |

| Comments: |
Warning: Don’t use the bathrooms at Great Gulf unless you have a gas mask. Also, Wamsutta trail and Buttress trail are a bit overgrown in the upper areas. Otherwise, trails were in pretty good shape. I hardly saw anyone on the trails, maybe because Madison hut is closed? No water available there, but I filled up at Washington summit with the usual crowds from the train. The weather was fine, but I was surprised to see so few hikers. I went clockwise on this 22 mile loop with 7,000 feet of climbing and it took me 8.5 hours, with the last 3 flat miles by headlamp. |
