| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
There were many vehicles in the lot at 8:15AM. Even so, there were plenty of open spots. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The water levels are very low. The Stony Brook crossing was easy on rocks. The crossings at 2.3 miles and 3.1 miles from the trailhead were even easier as there was very little water flowing. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail in good condition. There were no obstructions. There are at least three trees across the trail high enough above the ground to permit easy passage with no snowpack. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Fine for dogs. I saw at least a couple of dogs. |
|
| Bugs: |
A few small flying insects. There were some black and white spiky caterpillars including one at the summit. |

| Comments: |
The trails were mostly dry. There were a few muddy spots on both trails that were easy to go over on rocks. The ledges on the Carter-Moriah Trail were all dry making for secure footing. In wet or icy conditions, these ledges can be difficult just like the ledges coming up from Bangor Street.
The Stony Brook Trail passes through hardwood forest, so the path was covered in colorful leaves. There is an occasional loose rock hidden under the leaf cover that could pose a risk for a fall. The Carter-Moriah Trail rising up from the junction with the Kenduskeag Trail is steep but is not a problem with careful foot placement. When snow covered, this short steep section of trail can be by-passed by bushwhacking through the woods on the opposite side of the Mt Moriah summit ledge.
The views are excellent from the south facing ledges and the summit of Mt Moriah. The view included the fall foliage in Pinkham Notch and the Wild River valley.
In the AM, there a low-lying cloud in the Ammonoosuc River valley with the Kilkenny Range rising above it.
Many hikers out today including the Imp Campsite caretaker, the NU Outdoor Club group, CT hiking group, North Conway hiker, and a woman from New Gloucester ME. |
