I did some off-trail exploring of the upper branches of the Gale River today. The water-line road to the Bethlehem reservoir dam was nice and grassy with a little avoidable mud. After 1.6 miles the road ended and my bushwhack began. The river branches here and I followed Burnt Brook all the way up and came out close to the pond on the ridge. It was a fine 2 miles of cascades which I had to whack around some of, but mostly I walked in the stream bed or in decently open woods close by. I took the AT over the summit, saw a few people enjoying the views. There were tiny traces of ice on the trail up here. About a quarter mile after passing the shelter I followed an unnamed stream down to Hawthorne Falls. (I didn’t think it was as good as the falls on Burnt brook.) I made my way over to Flat Top Mtn and found views and a jar to sign in, placed by ZPorter in 2020 for the 1,000 highest. It started to snow/rain as I headed down to Thompson Brook and followed that down to the snowmobile trail where it crosses Garfield trail. It seems abandoned but it was good enough for walking on. Overall the footing wasn’t terrible today, there was some post-holing in the woods, but also lots of good rock-hopping up and down the stream beds, and nice walking on the forest roads with plenty of foliage still. |
