Comments: Trail grabbin and peak baggin today!
Headed out around 8:30a (28*F), and made quick work of the initial two miles of Oliverian to the junction with Pass Cutoff. Once you cross the wilderness boundary, the trail goes to hell per usual. We avoided most mud pits with dry feet, slipped on old corduroy trail work, and rolled ankles in long eroded stretches of trails. Square Ledge Trail from Pass Cutoff was good, with only the lone conifer hanging about five feet above trail. Views into the valley from here are beautiful, and unique. We could see that the leaves had mostly dropped on the Kanc side of the range, and a fair amount were still holding on at the Ferncroft side. The final .7 climb up Pass Cutoff we met rugged footing obscured by leaves, as well as first signs of snow. Walden Trail to the summit of Passaconaway was good, rugged and fun. We found more snow here, although a lot had melted compared to Danielle's trip to Whiteface the day before. Making our way across the ridge on the Walden Trail we enjoyed all of the trail over Nanamocomuck and Wonalancet Hedgehog...the steeps are STEEP, and some sections take care. We encountered the only folks we'd see all day at the four way intersection of Oliverian, Kelley, and Lawrence trails. Oliverian heading back to the Kanc was pretty breezy, a few muddy spots, easy water crossings, and great old waterbars that were functioning very well. Some spots up by the Square Ledge junction have seen erosion damage, and we imagined that the footing is probably better there when they're leaf free.
