Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We accessed the Megalloway Mountain trail head from Megalloway Road off US 3 near the Canadian Border. Megalloway Rd is an excellent dirt road. No issue for any vehicle. We then turned onto Tower Road, another excellent dirt road and made our way easily to the Coot trail head (kiosk, privy). There is a brown wooden sign affixed to a tree at the Megalloway and Smith Brook Rd intersection that reads “Fire Tower ——>.”

Comments
Comments: List: NH 100 Highest, NH 500 Highest, NH Fire Towers
Trail type: established trail, bushwhack
Jar/Canister: canister on West Megalloway, none on Megalloway

After parking the car, we started up a portion of a trail signed as “Bobcat.” We were on this for only a few hundred feet before realizing it was taking us to Megalloway peak and we were headed to West Megalloway. So, we took a bearing and headed off towards West Megalloway. It was extremely wet and boggy through the initial woods. This was harder to see due to the snow as well. After fighting the mud to keep my shoes on my feet, I asked if we could move to higher terrain and intersect the col; then work our way to the peak from there. My partner agreed and the woods became much more friendly from here. From the col to the height of land it was a nice climb through good woods. The summit contains a nice canister and even nicer view. The summit is ledgy without cliffs from this side. We made quick work heading back down on a new bearing that avoided the cliff bands, steep terrain and bogs we initially encountered.Several inches of snow blanket this area.

Coot Trail: signed, not blazed. Wide, simple to follow corridor. Several inches of snow that we had no issue traversing up or down in plain boots. Some persons may prefer traction on the descent. The trail takes the hiker directly to an awesome fire tower, large sign, and a well travelled path to an over look beyond the tower. I did not climb the tower as the steps were covered in wet snow. My partner did, though, up to the top landing (the cab of the tower is closed), and was rewarded with some fine views.
