After reading other reports on bushwhacking up the famous slide on Osceola, I decided to check it out. Armed with a compass and a map from Cal-topo showing the waterways, and a satellite photo from Google Earth, I started and ended on East Pond trail and I hit a few peaks for my lists while up on the ridge so it worked out well.
Osceola: Leaving the trail where others reported, I whacked east a bit until I reached water again, and found a confusing situation at first with several streams converging near this spot, and many big blowdowns blocking my way. Basically I decided to just head due South up the valley until it was clear I was on the correct branch, listening for the rush of water. Once I reached the big slabs and waterfalls I was a little out of my comfort zone at first, but it turned out to be doable with a little bushwhacking around. At the very top of the slide, there were a few cut trees, then I lost the path but it was only 200 feet maybe before I popped out at the summit. 2.5 hours up.
East Osceola: Out n back in 45 minutes “for the grid”
Middle and West Osceola: I easily found the herd path that follows the ridge and ends at West. A very fine view from Peggy’s Perch, and a canister. Pretty open woods. Took me 30 minutes from Osceola, then 15 minutes down to the height ‘o land.
East Scar: I had a good view of this peak the whole way down from West Osceola, and I still had daylight, and seeing it was less than half a mile away and only 600 feet of climbing it only added one hour to the trip. Decent woods most of the way, then extremely tight the last 200 feet or so. I found the sign and canister after searching around a bit. This one was easier than Scar West from the ski area, in my opinion, just because it is much shorter. Middle Scar still awaits.
